Maintaining balanced water chemistry is just as crucial in a saltwater pool as it is in a traditional chlorine pool—if not more so. While a TROXLLY salt chlorinator automates the heavy lifting of chlorine production, it doesn't eliminate the need for regular chemical monitoring.

Think of your chlorinator as the engine, and the water chemistry as the oil. If the chemistry is off, the engine can't run smoothly.

The 6 Key Parameters to Monitor

1. pH (The Most Critical Factor)

• Ideal Range: 7.2 – 7.6

Salt chlorinators naturally tend to slowly increase pH levels due to the electrolysis process. This is completely normal, but it requires attention.

• Too high: Reduces chlorine effectiveness (making it work harder) and causes scaling on pool surfaces and your salt cell.

• Too low: Can corrode metal components and irritate swimmers' eyes and skin.

•  Pro Tip: Keep a bottle of muriatic acid or pH decreaser handy. Small, weekly adjustments are better than big monthly swings.

2. Free Chlorine

• Ideal Range: 1.0 – 3.0 ppm

Even though your machine is making chlorine, you must verify it's doing its job. Test regular—especially after heavy usage (like a pool party) or heavy storms.

• Low levels? This usually indicates underproduction due to low salt levels, incorrect settings, or an aging cell plate.

3. Salt Level (Salinity)

• Ideal Range: 3000 – 4500 ppm (Optimized for Troxlly)

Check your owner's manual—each chlorinator has its sweet spot.

• Too low: The chlorinator won’t have enough "fuel" to generate chlorine.

• Too high: Can trigger error codes (High Salt) or reduce the lifespan of the cell.

•  Pro Tip: Always use digital salt meters for accuracy rather than test strips, and only add pool-grade salt (99% pure NaCl).

4. Cyanuric Acid (CYA / Stabilizer)

• Ideal Range: 30 – 50 ppm

Think of CYA as "sunscreen" for your chlorine. It protects chlorine from being burned off by UV rays.

• Too little: Rapid chlorine loss (your machine works overtime for nothing).

• Too much: "Chlorine lock"—chlorine is present but chemically ineffective.

• Note: Avoid overusing stabilized chlorine tablets (pucks) in salt systems, as they raise CYA levels uncontrollably.

5. Total Alkalinity (TA)

• Ideal Range: 80 – 120 ppm

Alkalinity acts as a "buffer" or "anchor" for your pH.

• Low TA: Causes wild pH fluctuations (bouncing up and down).

• High TA: Causes pH to drift upward constantly and makes it hard to lower.

6. Calcium Hardness

• Ideal Range: 200 – 400 ppm

This is especially important in areas with "hard" tap water.

• Too much: Causes rapid white scaling inside the salt cell plates (reducing lifespan).

• Too little: The water becomes aggressive and can etch plaster or corrode equipment.
